18/4/2009 to 18/4/2009
The New Art Gallery Walsall invite you to a fantastic free Vaisakhi event on Saturday 18 April, from 11am to 4pm to celebrate in style the festival of harvest and the birth of Sikh religion.
Whether you are Sikh or not, do not miss this opportunity to discover the cultural richness of the Sikh traditions and heritage through an exciting programme of performances and activities that have been put together for everyone to enjoy.
ASHT will deliver a talk on the shared heritage between the Sikhs and Britain which goes back over 150 years as well as a display illustrating this remarkable yet little known history.
Other higlights include Bhangra and Gidha (male and female dancing) alongside the Sikh martial arts technique Gatka. These will be accompanied by live music and tabla and sitar players.
The event will also include traditional storytelling sessions, the always popular mendhi hand patterns created by Rehana and her team, Vaisakhi displays created by pupils from local schools and free traditional Indian food! And for those of you who are looking for a bit of relaxation, you can join one of our free yoga workshops.
Ioannis Ioannou, Audience Development Curator, says, "After the previous two highly successful Vaisakhi events, there is an expectation now to host an even bigger and better one and we strongly believe we will achieve it again this year. Our programme of activities and workshops is really strong with something for everyone to participate and enjoy. Everyone is welcome".
