Celebrate Vaisakhi at the New Art Gallery Walsall
24/4/2010 to 24/4/2010
Vaisakhi is upon us again, and The New Art Gallery Walsall promises that this year's free Vaisakhi celebrations will be the biggest and best yet! Visitors from all cultural backgrounds are invited to learn, have fun and celebrate the creation of the Sikh religion and India's harvest time.
Bring your dancing shoes as the highlight of the day will be the well renowned Gabhru Punjab de Bhangra group, who will be wowing and entertaining visitors with enticing bhangra performances that are only seen in the heart of India. They will be joined by the Desi Divas, who will be dazzling visitors with their Gidha dance performances, whilst the Baba Deep Singh team will be putting on a captivating display of Gatka (Sikh martial arts). They will all be accompanied by live music.
If this isn't enough, allow yourself to be entertained by a heart wrenching, soul searching play about the last King of Punjab, Maharajah Duleep Singh and the Kohinoor, which will be performed in the Garman Ryan Galleries, and for the first time in Walsall. The story dramatically journeys through the life of Duleep Singh, and how at the tender age of six he became the Maharajah of Lahore, following the death of his father. He was soon after deposed and sent to live in England, where he immediately became a court favourite of Queen Victoria. (This play is currently on tour in the UK. Bookings available)
Why not take some time out to try something new and join in on one of our free yoga workshops. The event will also include the ever so popular Mehndi hand patterns created by Rehana and her team. Families and young people will have the opportunity to get arty in our family friendly workshop creating colourful and vivid mobiles to take home.
The event will also present the unique opportunity of behind the scenes gallery tours, so if you've ever wondered about what lurks behind the doors, then this is the perfect excursion for you!
Free, no need to book, just drop in.
