117 Years OnDate: Friday, 22 October, 2010
23rd October 2010 marks the 117th anniversary of the death of Maharajah Duleep Singh, the last Maharajah of the Sikhs. It is a date which has significance well beyond the tragic death of a disenchanted broken and ill man alone in his Paris hotel room.
The centenary in 1993 would provide the inspiration and focus for the Sikh community in the UK to embark upon a journey to recover that heritage which was so inextricably reflected in the life of their last ruler. It has been a challenging journey through the pages of a history which has ebbed and flowed as Empires have fallen and risen indelibly marking the destinies of whole nations, 17 years on the journey continues with renewed energy and commitment evident in every step.
